India was an advanced “manufacturing” nation well before the industrial age. It produced large quantities of goods for public consumption that the world clamoured to possess. This included not just clothes and ornaments world renowned for their design and beauty, but also sturdy equipment that met the requirements of an agricultural age; as well as weapons of war related to the tactics of that age.
India produced a range of land weapons and maritime ocean going vessels, that carried these goods around the world since antiquity. Indian arms and the use of war elephants for battlefield manoeuvres had in fact halted the Persian and Alexander’s all conquering armies at the Indus.
