India’s Africa Links can be a Template for Manufacturing Success

To fully understand “Make in India” – which has become the branding for the ambitious economic reformation being undertaken by the Indian government – there must first be an appreciation of the scope of the campaign, and also a perspective from faraway countries such as those in Africa.
When the Prime Minister Narendra Modiinspired campaign was launched, a major objective was to focus on job creation and skill enhancement in 25 sectors of the economy. The initiative also aimed at achieving high quality standards, minimising the impact of progress on the environment and attracting capital and technological investment.
Even before its launch, foreign equity caps in various sectors had been relaxed. Applications for licenses were made available online and their validity increased to three years. Various other norms and procedures were also relaxed.
