Innovation Must Drive “Make in India”

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “Make in India” initiative calls for the creation of an enabling environment that can lead to the country becoming a hub for global manufacturing. Similarly, one can observe a strong articulation of government policy on infrastructure and on the improving of human capacity through programmes to enhance skills in the work force.
The 2014-15 Economic Survey is probably one of the first policy documents to address “Make in India” as a means to stimulate economic growth. The survey subscribes to a dominant stream of recent scholarly debate – that the expansion of the service sector, especially in IT, caused a slump in manufacturing, which has impeded overall industrialisation and growth, as India bids to keep pace with the advanced economies of the world.
