Transforming the Indian Economy The “Make in India” campaign is part of a wider, nation-building exercise, devised to transform the nation into a global design and manufacturing hub. For the campaign to succeed and for long term-growth, there is also an urgent need to raise the global competitiveness of the Indian manufacturing sector.
In its vision statement, the government has set targets for manufacturing. These sectoral targets include raising its share in the country’s GDP from the current 16 percent to 25 percent by 2022, when it hopes to also create 100 million additional jobs and provide appropriate skills to rural migrants and the urban poor to ensure inclusive growth. Besides, these, it also aims to increase domestic value addition and technological depth, while enhancing global competitiveness and maintaining the sustainability of growth, amidst environmental concerns.
