Sri Lanka, India Ties are Poised to Return to “Irreversible Excellence”

Are India-Sri Lanka ties returning to the state of “irreversible excellence” that a former Sri Lankan foreign minister, the late Lakshman Kadirgamar, characterised of their relationship in an earlier era? President Maithripala Sirisena’s visit to India, his first abroad since his stunning defeat of Mahinda Rajapaksa in the election of January, 2015, has by all accounts been a success, warranting an answer in the affirmative to the earlier question.
A number of agreements were signed, including one on civil nuclear relations.
The Sirisena visit is to be reciprocated by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. It will be the first by an Indian premier in almost three decades; and one which holds out the promise of further consolidation of cooperation on the economic front, as well as greater convergence in strategic perspectives on regional security.
